Abstract

The main subject of this study is to show that it is possible to assume an intimate relationship between Joseph Butler(1692-1752)and Adam Smith(1723-1790)through comparative analysis of their arguments concerning self-deceit.

The relationship between Butler and Smith is a subject which has been relatively disregarded in relevant literature. Although scholars have observed similarity between them in respect of conscience, there are little research conducted on this subject. Focusing on self-deceit, the present study demonstrates that sufficient evidence exists to assume a more intimate relationship between Butler and Smith than has been considered.
