The sebum lipid assimilation and the growth inhibition of Pityrosporum ovale (1st report)

Abstract
Pityrosporum ovale (P. ovale) belongs to the yeast, and is known as a resident flora on the scalp and closely related to the seborrhoic dermatitis. It has been reported that increase of P. ovale causes dandruff and resulting itching from adolescence to adulthood. Accordingly, we investigated the assimilation of human sebum lipid and its components, such as a triglyceride by P. ovale, and the inhibition agents by a new technique of using a medium containing Polyoxyethylene (5mol) glyceryl monooleate.
In the results, the growing of P. ovale was confirmed with human sebum lipid at the level of 30μg/cm2, and was accelerated with oleic acid and glyceryl trioleate. In addition, the lipase activity of P. ovale was detected by using Bromocresol green as a pH indicator.
These results suggest that P. ovale assimilates the free fatty acids released from triglycerides of sebum and epidermal lipid.
On the other hand, the inhibition agents of P. ovale were found to be the following. The most effective agent was Hinokitiol.
Herbal extracts: Swertiae extract.
Perfume materials: Cinnamic alcohol, Jasmone-cis, Geraniol coeur, Terpineol, Aldehyde (C-18).
Preservatives: Benzoic acid, Sodium dehydroacetate
Antidandruff agents: Hinokitiol, Zinc pyrithion, Piroctone olamine
