Chromosome numbers of two chemotypes of Scoparia dulcis from Paraguay were examined, revealing two chromosome counts of 2n=20 (diploid) and 40 (tetraploid). Intraspecific polyploidy of S. dulcis found in this study suggests that polyploidization is involved in the diversification of this species. These findings show a promising new approach to taxonomic and genetic studies of Scoparia.
