WBGT measurements of tennis courts with a roof: The investigation of solar radiation screen effects

Abstract

In summer season, managing heat during physical activities in school and/or in regional sports facilities is needed, but it is poorly investigated. The purpose of the present study is to measure WBGT in indoor tennis courts with a roof of Gifu Memorial Center and investigate the solar radiation screen effect by a roof. Portable WBGT meters were installed in indoor courts and outdoor courts of Gifu Memorial Center, and WBGT was recorded every 1 min. In 2019/08/14-19, WBGT in indoor courts did not exceed 31°C (exercise is stopped in principle). Additionally, the difference in WBGT between indoor and outdoor (the solar radiation screen effect by a roof) was 4∼5°C in sunny days. This study showed that increases in WBGT was fairly mitigated by a roof, and the usefulness of sports facilities with a roof to manage heat.
