Abstract
Traditional Chinese medicine has its own concept of fever (fa re), and diagnostic and therapeutic systems stand on logic and philosophy quite different from those in modern medicine. In traditional Chinese medicine, fever does not always mean pathologically higher level of body temperature which can be measured by use of a thermometer, but sensation of heat, both exterior and interior of the body, and some other complaints of the patient are also categorized in fever, even though the actual body temperature still remains in the normal range. There are two classes of fever; “Wai gan fa re” and “Nei shang fa re”. The former is the fever caused by the action of the environment, and the latter is the fever caused internally of the body. The concept of fever in this Oriental medicine may contribute for better understanding of “fever syndromes”.
