Abstract

There is a fear that IT in it’s current state isn’t being effectively used when the purpose of IT utilization is limited to "Automation and labor saving" or "Rationalization and standardization". It is necessary to change the purpose of utilization based on the assessment guidelines advocated in the 1970's and 1980's by the ISO.

This paper explains the problem of limiting the purpose of IT utilization to "Automation and labor saving" or "Rationalization and standardization". Next, it is proposed that a manufacturing business should utilize IT for the following 3 purposes: the first is to identify the facts of the business as it is, the second is to support mutual understanding, and the final purpose is to aim for value creation. To realize these three purposes, a new information system that supports a manufacturing business is necessary. Some cases that use the master data managing engine and production simulator developed by the authors demonstrate a way to achieve effective IT utilization.
