Abstract

This paper describes the development of a device using Arduino to measure slopes and uneven surfaces of city streets for the safety of wheel chair users, the experiment conducted using the device, and the results. Arduino, an open-source electronic prototyping platform that enables individual developers to create their own interactive devices cheaply and easily, can be used to measure outdoor environments. This paper focuses on identifying street slopes and uneven surfaces too dangerous for wheelchairs. For the experiment, city streets in Tokorozawa, Japan were measured and plotted in three colors on Google Maps representing street grades to show users the safest route options. During the experiment three problems were discovered that led to some inaccurate mapping. These problems will need to be addressed in order for future experiments to generate better data.
