Abstract
Propylene glycol synthesis by the liquid-phase hydrogenation of lactic acid was studied with Ru-Sn/C catalysts. The catalyst prepared with Ru/Sn=1 (molar ratio) gave RuSn intermetallic compound of body-centered cubic structure. The particle size of RuSn depended on metal sources and pH for impregnation. Hydrogenation of aqueous 5% lactic acid solution gave 100% conversion and 98% selectivity to propylene glycol at 190 degree C, 4 MPa and 1 h.
