Abstract

A field experiment was conducted to investigate clothing microclimate of the women who underwent breast cancer surgery. Participants were 4 postoperative subjects ( 2 after unilateral full mastectomy and 2 after breast conserving surgery with radiation therapy) and 4 normal subjects. The temperature and humidity were measured inside of brassiere (and breast form), at the diseased side and the healthy side for postoperative subjects, or at the right side and the left side for normal subjects, every 10 seconds for 60 min. A higher temperature was observed at the diseased side in every postoperative subject, which could be attributed to a) silicone breast form worn by the subjects after mastectomy, and b) impairment of sweating induced by radiation following a breast conserving operation. A remarkable high humidity was also observed inside of silicone breast form. These data suggest thermal discomfort of clothing of the breast cancer patients and survivors.
