Abstract

The purpose of this investigation was to examine the assumed relationship between figure/appearance features and personality traits, and to examine the cognition of clothing features, physiognomic features, and body features as a unity from the standpoint of becomingness of dress.
The results of this study are as follows:
1. Four factors were extracted as the structure of figure/appearance features inferred from personality traits. They were able to be interpreted as follows ; I. Eccentricity and novelty of dress, II. Fatness and largeness of body/physiognomy, III. Roundness and brightness of figure/appearane, IV. Firmness and proportion of body/physiogomy. In these four fcctors, “Eccentricity and novelty of dress”was deemed to contribute most.
2. Three factors were extracted as the structure of personality traits inferred from figure/appearance features. they were interpreted as follows; I. Sociability, II. Discretion, and III. Positivity. In these three factors, “Sociability”was deemed to contribute most.
3. The obvious relationship between figure/appearance features (four components) and personality traits (three components) was observed as follows : Positivity was closely related to eccentricity/novelty of dress; Low-sociability/indiscretion was closely related to eccentricity/novelty of dress; Sociability was closely related to roundness of figure/appearance; Positivity was closely related to brightness of figure/appearance (the above were common to male-female subjects), Broad-mindness/positivity was closely related to fatness and largeness of body/physiognomy; Low-intelligence was closely related to fatness and largeness of body/physiognomy ; Discretion/positivity was closely related to firmness and proportion of body/physiognomy (the above were more conspicuous for female subjects) .
4. The data in questionnaire I were analysed using“The method of Quantification III”. The Synthetic relationship was observed between the groups of ninety figure/appearance features and those of twenty personality traits.
5. From the results of“The Method of Quantification III”, three clear cognitive-bases, at least, on the well-matched pairs of clothing features, physiognomic features and body features were confirmed as follows; the first was combination between“Sporty dressing·Bright colored dressing·Warm colored dressing“and”Round-body·Fat-eyebrows·Round-eyes·Plump-cheeks·Large-eyes”, and the second was combination between “Dressy dressing·Dark colored dressing·Cool colored dressing” and“Thin-body·Angular-body·Long slimeyes·Hollow-cheeks·Small-eyes”, and the third was combination between“Urban dressing·High-quality dressing·Fashionable dressing·Famous-brand dressing” and “ High height·Long legs·Firm body”.
