Abstract

We have conducted research about men in their twenties, and forties to fifties by using a questionnaire to learn about their clothing and lifestyle as well as how they are related. The results are as follows:
1) The six factors, which were leisure wear, how to wear a suit, house wear, clothing standards at work, necessity of work clothes, and clothes for formal occasions, were educed with the factor analysis about their attitudes to clothing. Regarding work clothes, men in their twenties are interested in clothes that express their individuality. Regarding leisure wear, they tend to be concerned about what they wear when they go out. Men in their forties and fifties have a more traditional idea about work clothes and believe they should be functional.
2) The seven factors, which were health and reasons for living, relationship with local society, personal esteem, attitude about work, human relationships, how to spend free time, and thoughts about formal situations, were educed with the factor analysis regarding their attitudes about lifestyle. Men in their twenties prefer a more private lifestyle which focuses on spending more time with their families and actively spending their free time. However, men in their forties and fifties more readily accept the traditional rules of society regarding human relationships within the local community.
3) We analyzed the relationships between each of the factors concerning men's attitudes about clothing and lifestyle by using canonical correlation analysis. Concerning men's attitudes about clothes, men with no traditional values concerning work clothes and who have a negative opinion about the necessity of wearing a suit are more positive about spending their free time as compared to working. Concerning men's attitudes about lifestyle, men that have more traditional values about work clothes and are not so interested in leisure wear show more passivity regarding their personal esteem and human relationships. The clothing factors concerning formal occasions and house wear are related to the lifestyle factors concerning personal esteem and thoughts about formal occasions.
