Abstract

We examined the relation between the feed condition and fabric property to prevent seam slippage using a drop feed and variable top feed sewing machine.
At first the feed condition (Lx: (La-LB) LA/LB_) and the percentage of seam contraction (Sx) when the seam slippage was canceled were obtained in the condition of 2-ply fabrics (same fabrics), where LA and LB are the feed strokes of variable top feed and drop feed, respectively. Lx and Sx were affected by the property of top fabric and the changeable tendencies of Lx and Sx were explainable using the first and second principal components obtained from the principal component analysis. In the case of 2-ply fabrics (different fabric combination), Lx and Sx showed the tendencies to change with the fabric property. Using the fabric property as explanatory variable, two multiple regression equations to estimate Lx and Sx were obtained. In both the multiple regression equations, B1/TM1 was very significant variable, where B1 and TM1 are bending rigidity and thickness of top fabric, respectively. The calculated values of Lx and Sx from both the equations agreed well with the experimental values.
