We design a model to examine the relationship between value recognition for natural environment and motivation for environmental conservation activities, by using structural equation modeling with questionnaire data from residents living in areas around Hayasaki-naiko. The proposed model shows that residents who have a high interest in Lake Biwa evaluate the value of the natural environment (use value, non-use value) of Hayasaki-naiko. Furthermore, residents who evaluate the use value of the natural environment are strongly motivated to pursue environmental conservation activities, while those who evaluate the non-use value of the natural environment have little motivation to do so. Residents who are not familiar with the situation of Hayasaki-naiko evaluate the value of the natural environment (use value, non-use value) of Hayasaki-naiko as a regional resource to conserve and use for the purpose of interaction with others. Short-term residents evaluate the use value of the natural environment as a regional resource to conserve and use for interaction with others.
