Raising the environmental awareness of citizens is essential to achieving carbon neutrality. However, the general public, including young individuals, is not fully aware of environmental issues. In this study, we focused on gamification as a new approach to raise environmental awareness among young people and to promote behavioral change. Based on a preliminary questionnaire, trends in environmental awareness and behavior were classified using cluster analysis, and participants were selected accordingly. The participants were asked to experience the game, and changes in their environmental awareness and behavioral intentions were evaluated before and after. The game was devised so that players could systematically acquire knowledge about the environment while enjoying themselves by taking random quizzes. As a result, it was confirmed that the players as a whole improved their awareness of environmental issues and their will to take decarbonization actions. In terms of willingness to take action, respondents in the low awareness/low activity cluster in particular showed the most significant improvement. These results indicate that the quiz-based decarbonization game is an effective method to raise participants’ environmental awareness and encourage behavioral change.
