Abstract
In this paper we deal with complaints about annoyance and trouble caused by various pollution phenomena in a megalopolis. For this purpose, free response test questionnaires were mailed to the people who had filed such complaints at the Setagaya-city Office in Tokyo. In this survey a complainer subject was asked to write in detail about the annoyance and trouble that he/she had been suffered. In the free response data obtained, "noise" and "sound" are written with high frequency. Two-way cluster analysis is adopted to examine the free response data. In this study, 80 words that are found more than 20 times among whole answers are classified based on a similarity measure. Then, 118 respondents are divided into several groups in the same way. In order to characterize each respondent group, we introduce a frequency matrix and a density matrix which show the frequecy of each word given by each respondent. Cluster analysis shows that various noises of Karaoke or various handling works and a bad smell are important factors characterizing respondent groups. Further more, description of perceiving annoyance and trouble and consideration of resolution procedures are also prominent.
