The compound formed at room temperature in vapor-deposited polycrystalline bimetallic Au/Al thin films was investigated by X-ray diffraction. Initially an intermetallic compound Au5Al2 is formed irrespective of the thickness ratio of gold to aluminum. When the gold layer is consumed leaving an aluminum layer, Au2Al is formed.
