Abstract
This paper considers the relation between social capital and crime rate in the community. In recent research on the relations between community and crime, there are three models; the linear development model, the systemic model, and the environmental criminology approach. I examine precedent studies of these models and consider the systemic model as most notable. After examining the collective efficacy theory by Sampson, I adopt his theory in the systemic model, and propose the integrated systemic model as an ideal model to explain crime rate in the community. Furthermore, examining the function of social capital which has attracted considerable interest of researchers in various domains of social science, I explain the crime prevention effect of social capital by applying the collective efficacy theory.
Through the above-mentioned work, I show the significance of the community-based crime prevention and the characteristics of community for preventing crime effectively. Furthermore, I clarify the direction of the effectiveness crime prevention in the community in modern society.
