This study describes the construction and evaluation of a low energy house which should be in harmony with the environment and also be assisted by natural energy resources and unused energy. First of all, a concept of the low energy house and its fundamental planning for various experiments on passive and active strategies were shown. Next, energy consumption of a typical house in Hokkaido was investigated. We also evaluated the performance on thermal insulation and air-tightness of the low energy house. It was estimated that annual primary energy consumption would be approx. ten percent of typical house's one in Hokkaido. Experiments started on June 1, 1997. Results in June showed that they were successfully operated.
