Abstract
The residential energy consumption per household in 1956 and 1957 was estimated by using statistical data of family income and expenditure and retail-price surveys. Woody biomass resources such as firewood and charcoal were mainly consumed during that time. In the six biggest cities of Japan (Tokyo, Yokohama, Nagoya, Kyoto, Osaka, and Kobe), the woody biomass resources represented 20.7% to 49.2% of the residential energy consumption. In small and medium cities, the woody biomass resources represented 47.6% to 93.0%.
