Effective utilization of energy consumption data measured by smart meters is expected to contribute in understanding occupants’ behavior including air conditioning usage. However, due to mechanical ON/OFF to control the indoor temperature and the automatic cleaning function, the electricity consumption of the air conditioner not always correspond with the switching on/off actions of the occupants. Therefore, the authors developed an algorithm to distinguish the ON/OFF state of air conditioners on the basis of the observed dataset in 479 dwellings at a residential building complex located in Osaka, Japan. The proposed algorithm was validated by comparison with the observed data of electricity consumption and air conditioning behavior in Fukuoka and Kagoshima. This comparison shows that the accuracy of estimating the ON/OFF state of air conditioners is approximately 99%.
