Abstract

Techniques for controlling sources of mining-related pollution are reviewed from a point of view of geology. Those techniques comprise mine sealing, restoration and plantation of waste rock and slime deposits, processing mine drainage and treatment of waste sludge. Although a complete sealing of mine is ideal, it is almost impossible in many mines. Processing acid mine water is inevitable in some abandoned mines and this causes a troublesome treatment of waste sludge. Techniques to reduce the bulk of waste sludge or injection of waste sludge into the underground, are studied. by the Metal Mining Agency of Japan Accumulated knowledge of the geological sciences on mineral deposits will play an important role in planning to control the mining-related pollution.
