Abstract
With a view of acquiring a basis for the thermodynamic treatment of reactions' involving sulphur in molten copper, the equilibrium in the reduction of copper sulphide in liquid copper by hydrogen gas has been studied with the aid of a flow method.
The effect of temperature upon the equilibrium constant and the free-energy change in the reaction within the 1115-11245°C has been determined. The experimental results are summarized by the equations.
Cu2S(in Liq. Cu)+H2=2Cu(1)+H2S;
_??_
ΔF°=15552+0.110T
By combining the equations here determined witn the known data of hydrogen sulphide, the following equations have been obtained with regard to the dissociation pressure of Copper sulphide dissolved in liquid copper.
2Cu2S(in liq. Cu)=4Cu(1)+S2/
_??_
ΔF°=74035-23.11T
On the basis of the results here obtained, the data described in the 6 th report and the constitutionary diagram Cu-Cu2S, theoretical considerations as to the equilibium relations between copper, sulphur and hydrogen at high temperature have been carried out and the composite diagrams of Cu-S-H and Cu-S have deen determined
