Abstract
The interaction between aqueous solution of 5×10-3 N xanthates from methyl to amyland leached or unleached galena powders obtained by dry grinding, has been studied as follows. The amounts of xanthate sorption on galena and lead xanthate suspension in liquid phase, resultingfrom metathetical reaction of xanthate ion with the oxidized galena surface, are measuredpotentiometrically by iodometric titration. The surface areas of adsorbents are estimated by B. E. T. method using nitrogen gas adsorption data at low temperature. The higher is the alkylradical of xanthate, the more amounts of xanthate are sorbed, on the contrary, the less of leadxanthate suspended. When methyl or ethyl xanthate acts on the leached galena, monolayer adsorptionof collector presumably takes place, the oxidized layer of galena surface being almostwashed away. With the other galena surfaces where oxidized coatings are not removed the formationof thick layers of lead xanthate are considered.
Regarding the above experimental results, utilization of higher xanthate on stronglyoxidized galena may be investigated in connection with the variation of xanthate sorption andlead xanthate suspension against collector concentration.
