Ion-Exchangeable Layered Clays

～Application as Host Materials for Functional Color Materials

Abstract

In this review, author explained basic structural features and various properties of smectite, which is one of cation-exchangeable layered clay, and then, organo bentonite utilized in paint and ink industries, which is smectite modified by amphiphilic compound, introduced. Author introduced present R&D of solid color materials hybridizing various dyes with smectite by cation-exchange reaction. Moreover, possibility of smectite/dyes hybrid solid color materials as molecular sensing materials was referred.
