Abstract

Naphthylphenylphthalides are expected to have more greater bathochromic shift in comparison with diphenylphthalides such as Crystal Violet Lactone (CVL). The naphthylphenylphthalide derivatives having various substituents were synthesized in the following manner : Naphthylphthalide, prepared by the condensation betweeen naphthylaldehyde and m-dimethylaminobenzoic acid, was oxidized with sodium rn-nitrobenzenesulfonate to give naphthoylbenzoic acid. Then naphthoylbenzoic acid was condensed with various aniline derivatives or naphthylamine derivatives in acetic anhydride.
All these naphthylphenylphthalide derivatives were colored in zinc 3, 5-bis (1-phenylethyl) salicylate (SAZN) -C6H6 solution or 95% acetic acid and their vis absorption spectra were measured. The bathochromic shift of the naphthylphthalide derivatives in their vis absorption spectra was greater 30-70 nm compared with diphenylphthalide derivatives, which was adequate as blue leuco dyes for the use in full color image.
