Abstract
Botulinum toxin is a nerve toxin produced by Clostridium botulinum, an anaerobic Gram-positive bacillus. Botulinum toxin is known to be the most lethal poison. In 1997, the American Dr. Alan Scott used botulinum toxin to treat strabismus, making it the first clinical use of botulinum toxin. In the ophthalmology field, botulinum toxins are frequently used for hemifacial spasm and blepharospasm patients. Here, I have reviewed the results ofbotulinum toxin therapy for hemifacial spasm and blepharospasm in our hospital as well as the practical aspects of using botulinum toxin therapy. In addition, I have also discussed the up-and-coming use ofbotulinum toxin for treating strabismus and epiphora patients. My hope is that many more medical people will come to know botulinum toxin therapy and to use it in their clinical fields.
