Abstract
The behavior of gas phase ion in the atmosphere (atmospheric ions) is influenced significantly by the interactions with aerosol particles. Positive and negative ions generated by ionization in the atmosphere are lost either ion-ion recombination or attachment to aerosols. Under the conditions with relatively higher particle concentration, the concentration and the lifetime of the atmospheric ions are determined by particle concentration. Atmospheric ions experience ion-molecule reactions with a variety of species in the atmosphere and change their chemical compositions during their lifetimes. These ions can promote particle formation through ion-induced nucleation. In this article, the interactions between ions and aerosol particle in the atmosphere are briefly presented. Some points to be considered to understand the behavior and the nature of ions in indoor environment are also mentioned.
