Abstract
The importance of the cultural landscapes that compose different parts of our planet can be justified by the uniqueness and specific cultural and biological richness presented by the interaction between the human being and the surrounding natural environment. In order to preserve its valuable structure, studies about its resilience are extremely necessary in the current circumstances of the society since many changes are happening quickly and unexpectedly. Considering this context, the present study aimed to identify the beneficial action of sustainable tourism, an important tool for sustainable development, in contributing to a more resilient cultural landscape in Taketomi Island, Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. Through the use of cultural landscape resilience indicators applied to the local people, opinion questionnaires applied to the touristic community and an analytical landscape mapping, it was possible to understand the latent power of sustainable tourism in the region to exploit the economic potential of the island while contributing positively to its landscape resilience.
