Abstract
An 80-year-old female patient underwent treatment for her nevus of Ota with external beta-ray 50-years ago. The irradiated areas became scarred and ulcerated a few years later. Being resistant to a variety of topical treatment, tumorous lesions had developed 2-3 years prior to her first visit. At our clinic, an irregularly shaped, verrucous hyperkeratotic mass of hard consistency was noticed from the left outer eye angle toward the upper-lateral direction. The mass was located on poikilodermic “chronic radiodermatitis” lesions. Pathology indicated characteristics of squamous cell carcinoma. The tumor was curatively and successfully excised. Statistically there have not been many cases of postirradiation skin cancer especially caused by external beta-ray. The reason for this was considered because there are few cases treated by external beta-ray. In addition, in future cases of postirradiation skin cancer, the possibility of an increase in the number of cases of basal cell carcinoma generated through long incubation periods in the use of low radiation dose was suggested.[Skin Cancer (Japan) 2013 ; 28 : 89-93]
