Abstract
An 80-year-old man presented with a purpuric macule on his right cheek.
The histological examination showed proliferated and dilated small vessels in the dermis and subcutis. Atypical cell was not recognized in the specimen. The lesion developed rapidly to the scalp and neck, and hematological examination showed decreased platelet counts. There was no sign of intracranial invasion. Abdominal CT and MRI showed multiple hemangiomas in the spleen.
32 Gy of electon beam radiotherapy for the skin lesion had significant local effect, but disseminated intravascular coagulation was not improved. The patient died of pulmonary failure 8 months after the initial observation. Autopsy and pathological examination revealed multiple hemangiomas of the spleen and liver, showing no signof malignancy.[Skin Cancer (Japan) 2001; 16: 357-360]
