Abstract
Using cow hoof and snout stratum corneum slices as a normal stratum corneum or a pathologic stratum corneum model, the water-holding capacity of a trimethylglycine solution was studied. The trimethylglycine solution showed a concentration-dependent increase in water-holding capacity. In addition, a greater water-holding capacity was seen in the pathologic stratum corneum model. We also studied cream containing trimethylglycine in 20 patients with dry skin diseases including atopic dermatitis. Water content of the stratum corneum significantly increased, with noticeable improvement of scale and dry skin symptom at 2 weeks after the application. In addition, 3 formulations (a lotion, emulsion, and cream) containing trimethylglycine were used in 30 healthy female subjects for 4 consecutive weeks. No adverse reactions were observed in this group, and more than 80% of these subjects found all 3 formulations acceptable and answered “favorable.”
