Abstract
This paper describes a basic idea of an automatic balloon expansion system for Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty. Electrical expansion apparatus was fabricated here with a stepping motor and a glass syringe driven by a Personal Computer. Quantitative index for vascular mechanical characteristics was proposed as lumped parameters of an electrical circuit model of the balloon system. The parameters were identified through on-line least squared method. At the same time, the pressure in the balloon was estimated using a state observer.
