Abstract
An effective quantum theory for collective coordinates is derived from a field theory within adiabatic and semiclassical approximations. The field variables are transformed into physically meaningful collective coordinates and their "environment" which consists of simple harmonic oscillators. This method is illustrated in the context of homogeneous quantum nucleation in a relativistic real scalar field.
