Abstract
The basic principle of enterprise-based unionism is to seek wage increases through enterprise activities. The aim of this paper is to understand the changes of enterprise-based unionism under severe global economic competition. We approach the problem by investigating the measures taken by enterprise-based unions to cope with four major problems, namely; (1) labor management in a period of model change in automotive plants, (2) changes in work organization, (3) overtime work problems, and (4) the increase of non-regular workers. We elucidated that, as a result of unions taking charge in situations where production control was flawed, they have achieved some improvements with regard to personnel shortages and excessive changes in work organization. Thus, it can be expected that enterprise-based unions will find ways to improve work conditions.
