Abstract

This research compares media framing in disaster news from Chinese and Japanese newspapers. Content analysis is administered in this research to compare the news reports about the Great East Japan Earthquake of the Yomiuri Shinbun and the Asahi Shinbun from March 11 to one month later April 11 in 2011, and the news reports about Wen Chuan Earthquake of the People's Daily and the Southern Weekly from May 12 to June 12 in 2008. The result identify that Japanese newspapers focus on the affect, rescue operations and post-disaster reconstruction in disaster news. And in Chinese newspapers, the People's Daily focused on the rescue operations especially the relief of the government, and the Southern Weekly paid attention to the reports of post disaster introspection and post disaster reconstruction. Considering little research has been done to analyze the freedom and radical Chinese newspapers, and therefore this research will contribute to get a thorough understanding the viewpoints of Chinese media.
