Places Created from Abandoned Houses and Expression Activities

A Case Study in the Town of Onomichi, Hiroshima

Abstract

Due to the declining population, the number of abandoned houses in Japan is increasing, creating a serious social problem. However, the renovation of these houses has led to the creation of many places for community interaction in local areas. This research examines a case in the town of Onomichi, Hiroshima prefecture, where local agents have been actively engaging in revitalizing vacant houses since 2007. Our study is based on discussions from research meetings with two influential agents, and observations of their activities. They have shared the renovation process, with people both inside and outside the community. We found that a diverse group of people developed various ways of relating to these spaces during the process.
