Abstract

The objective of this study is to clarify the features of how children relate media to each other in the problem-solving process in learning to appreciate opera as a teaching tool.

The study was conducted as follows. First, based on the writings of John Dewey, the relationship between art appreciation and media was established to obtain a theoretical perspective for analyzing problem-solving in art appreciation. Next, art appreciation classes were designed and implemented, using opera as a teaching tool, and, following that, analyzed. The analysis in this paper focusses on how children use media in relation to the problem-solving process in the classes. The results were used to examine the distinctive qualities of problem-solving in learning to appreciate opera as a teaching tool.

The following results were obtained : 1) Children use multiple media simultaneously in relation to the problem-solving process. 2) Children use different visual media in relation to one another to appreciate the video for the first time. 3) Interactions with music begin anew when children turn their attention to the existence of sounds. Thereafter, they use the visual media in relation to sounds.
