Abstract
This paper presents the design stages of an Intelligent Process Controller (IPC) for Electro Discharge Machining (EDM) process. To obtain higher performance and to increase the accuracy of the EDM, effective means of gap monitoring, pulse classification, and process control are vital. The performance of EDM machining, in terms of accuracy, surface finish and material removal rate, is affected by many factors. Relationships between these factors and machining performance are highly non linear and stochastic in nature. Therefore the development of an intelligent process controller based on the gap condition is vital to improve the productivity of the EDM process. This paper presents an approach based on Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) for generating a control signal according to the machining gap condition.
