Purpose: Although the benefits and risks of internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeling for idiopathic epiretinal membrane (iERM) have been widely studied, limited data exist regarding its effects in eyes with diabetic retinopathy (DR). This study aimed to evaluate postoperative visual function following ILM peeling in patients with iERM accompanied with DR.
Methods: This study included 11 eyes with iERM and coexisting DR that underwent vitrectomy with ILM peeling between August 2020 and December 2021, with a minimum postoperative follow-up of six months. Evaluated parameters included best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), M-CHARTS scores (vertical and horizontal), and central macular thickness (CMT). Retinal sensitivity at central 4°, 10°, and 20° was assessed in 8 eyes with sufficient follow-up data.
Results: The logMAR BCVA significantly improved from 0.14±0.12 preoperatively to 0.06±0.10 postoperatively (p=0.001). CMT showed no significant thinning (339±64 μm preoperatively vs. 335±81 μm postoperatively). M-CHARTS scores showed no significant changes in either vertical or horizontal measurements. Retinal sensitivity at central 4°, 10°, and 20° indicated no postoperative decline.
Conclusion: It was suggested that ILM peeling for iERM in eyes with DR did not result in decreased retinal sensitivity within the vascular arcade.
