Abstract

The vapor-liquid equilibria of volatile polluting materials in seawater are very important data for simulating their behaviors and the distribution in seawater distillation plants.
In this work, the vapor-liquid equilibria of hydrogen nitrite, hydrogen cyanide, methyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol,n-and iso-propyl alcohols,n-and iso-butyl alcohols,iso-amyl alcohol, acetone, and alkyl benzene sulfonate (ABS) in water were measured under given conditions by using Othmer type of equilibrium distillation apparatus.
It seems that hydrogen nitrite is not concentrated into product water at pH values higher than pH7 (the running pH condition of seawater distillation plants).
Cyanide ion forms metallic complexes with some metallic ions in seawater. Therefore, hydrogen cyanide lower than 0.1ppm concentration does not seem to be evaporated.
However, acetone and alcohols had high vapor-liquid equilibrium ratio, and they were concentrated in distilled water.
ABS was not detected in the vapor phase of ABS-water system.
