Abstract
Salt in soil water inhibits various physiological processes and the growth of plants for reasons having to do with the osmotic or waterdeficit effects of salinity and the salt-specific or ion-excess effects of salinity. The effects of the water deficit and the ion-excess were explained in view of root hydraulic conductivity and chemical signals from roots, the differences in salt tolerance among cultivars of crop plants and the mechanisms of salt tolerance in halophytes.
