Abstract
We reviewed the Tokyo Guidelines (TG13) for the management of acute cholangitis and cholecystitis. As for acute cholangitis, abdominal pain was deleted from the diagnostic criteria and the severity assessment criteria enabled practitioners separation of mild and moderate cases at the time of diagnosis. Regarding acute cholecystitis, imaging findings characteristic of acute cholecystitis became necessary for diagnosis. Although several randomized control trials revealed the superiority of early laparoscopic cholecystectomy over delayed cholecystectomy, superiority of early laparoscopic cholecystectomy for patients with moderate acute cholecystitis over delayed laparoscopic cholecystectomy and optimal timing for delayed cholecystectomy have not yet been clarified.
