Because of the health hazards associated with accumulated radiation doses from occupational radiation exposure during fluoroscopic endoscopic procedures, physicians involved in these procedures must make every effort to protect not only their patients and themselves, but also their medical staff.
With regard to ERCP-related procedures, it has been reported that radiation doses were significantly higher for therapeutic ERCP than for diagnostic ERCP, and that EUS-BD used significantly higher radiation doses than ERCP, even though the procedure time was significantly shorter.
The three principles of radiation protection, "justification," "optimization," "dose limitation," and "diagnostic reference level," should be understood, and radiation protection measures should be taken in accordance with the fluoroscopy equipment used at each facility, and the ever-advancing technologies to reduce radiation exposure should be widely recognized.
