Abstract

During the last few years, the carbon plate has taken the place of the metallic plate as the slider of the current collector of an electric car. Owing to its high contact resistance, the trolley wire has frequently been broken down by melting. Since the temperature rise of the trolley wire should be less than 200°C. the continuous carry, current capacity of the current collector at still stand, using ordinally carbon sliders, could not exceed 200 ampere, but now by using graphitised carbon sliders made by Nippon Carbon K.K, , it is increased to 300 ampere.
At the laboratory of Toyo Denki Seizo K.K., many measurements on the temperature rise of the carbon slider and the trolley wire are being tried for various currents, contact pressures and kinds of sliders. Some of its results are described in this paper.
