Preparation methods and pore-size control techniques of nanoporous carbon are reviewed. The methods available for the formation of nanopores in carbon materials comprise the carbonization method, activation method, template method, heat elimination method, polymer blend method, vapor-phase growth method, and sol-gel method. A number of techniques for the control of pore-size in the preparation of molecular sieving carbon are presented including the pore-size reduction techniques of the polymer coating method, chemical vapor deposition method, and heat shrinking method.
