Subjective Comprehension and Evaluation of E-Learning among Commuting College Students

The Case of Asynchronous E-Learning

Abstract

Due to the COVID-19 epidemic, almost all universities were under urgent need to offer distance learning in 2020. The present study examined the evaluations of e-learning using asynchronous materials with slides with college students in Tokyo area（N=611）. While the materials used were positively evaluated, the students tended to evaluate that they can understand better in face to face classes than in online classes, the degree of which differ among grades and majors, and they preferred face to face classes to online classes. It was also found that they were pleased with the clarity and convenience of the online classes, and were dissatisfied with the one-sidedness and difficulty in maintaining motivation for keep studying. An analysis of their open-ended responses revealed that the inability to ask questions directly and the difficulty of maintaining motivation lead to negative evaluations of distance learning.
