When an ice thermal storage system is introduced into a district cooling system, the hydraulic ice transport system must have an advantage over a conventional water transport system in saving pipe sizes and pumping powers. Referring to the literature providing direct information on the hydraulic transport of ice-water mixtures, the author comments on the following subjects :
•Definitions of an ice packing factor.
• The capacity of heat transported with ice-water mixtures.
• District distribution system.
• Flow patterns in ice-water two-phase flow in straight pipes.
• General expressions for pressure losses in solid-liquid two-phase flow.
• The characteristics of pressure losses in ice-water two-phase flow.
•Choking phenomena in channels.
