Abstract
We clarified trends in diabetes mellitus (DM) and borderline type (BT) prevalence among public school teachers from 1992 to 2003 using annual detailed health checkup data from our health-care center. Annual participants averaged 3,444 men and 1,555 women. DM and BT were diagnosed based on medical history and 75-g oral glucose tolerance tests using Japan Diabetes Society criteria for 1999. The age-adjusted prevalence of DM increased significantly from 5.4% to 8.9% in men and from 1.8% to 3.1% in women during the study. The age-adjusted prevalence of BT also increased significantly from 14.8% to 21.7% in men and from 8.0% to 12.0% in women. The frequency of obesity (body mass index≥25 kg/m2) also increased significantly among men. The obesity increase contributed in part to the increased prevalence of glucose intolerance in men. These results among public school teachers were consistent with the national upward trend in DM.
