Purpose: We studied borderline-diabetes risk factors.
Subjects and Methods: Subjects were men undergoing a 75 g oral glucose tolerance test (75 g OGTT) twice or more at 3-year or longer intervals over the last 10 years. Test results were evaluated based on Japanese Society of Diabetes Mellitus criteria. Patients with borderline or diabetic conditions were excluded. Patients maintaining normal glucose tolerance (NGT) were assigned to the NGT group. Those showing change from normal to borderline glucose tolerance were divided into 4 groups based on plasma glucose tolerance test results-IFG, 60 IGT, IGT, and IFG+IGT. We studied risk factors in each group borderline.
Results: Borderline risk factors included reduced insulin sensitivity and an increased plasma glucose level 60 minutes after 75 g OGTT at the start of observation, both of which were common to all groups.
Conclusions: Patients showing a plasma glucose increase 60 minutes after loading should be considered at risk for deterioration to borderline levels.
