Abstract
In our previous report, we demonstrated that aged patients with diabetic glucose intolerance could be divided into two groups, one with and the other without cerebral thrombosis.
In the present study, we succeeded in discriminating aged patients with diabetic glucose intolerance into these two groups on the basis of five clinical criteria (the presence or absence of diabetic retinopathy, insulinogenic index, fasting blood sugar levels, peak blood sugar levels after glucose loading, and pattern of the glucose tolerance curve) using canonical discriminant analysis. The predictive performance on the index sample of subjects obtained with the discriminant formula was evaluated by comparison against the actual classification of the subjects. The probability of giving a correct classification was approximately 70% on average. The most important clinical criteria in discriminating the two groups were diabetic retinopathy and insulinogenic index. Among the two groups of aged patients with diabetic glucose intolerance, the one with cerebral thrombosis exhibits diabetic retinopathy and has a relatively high insulinogenic index, while the other without cerebral thrombosis lacks diabetic retinopathy and has a relatively low insulinogenic index.
